  • 1 - Topic 1; Children Learn through Conditioning, Reinforcement and Observation
    This topic discusses what learning is and how children learn through conditioning (Pavlov, 1928), via operant conditioning (Skinner, 1938), and through observation (Bandura, 1941).

    Topic Outcomes

    Upon completion of Topic 1, you will be able to do the following:

    1. Explain what learning is
    2. Discuss how classical conditioning describes how children learn
    3. Suggest how operant conditioning explains how children learn
    4. Describe how children learn through observation
    5. Relate how the different theories are applied in the classroom.
  • 2 - Topic 2: How Children Learn according to Piaget, Vygotsky, Ausubel and Kohler Topic Overview
    This topic discusses the theories proposed by Piaget, Vygotsky, Ausubel and Kohler on how children learn.

    Topic Outcomes

    Upon completion of this topic, you will be able to:

    1. Explain Piaget's theory on how children learn
    2. Describe how Piaget's theory is applied in the classroom
    3. Explain Vygotsky's theory on how children learn
    4. Describe how Vygotsky's theory is applied in the classroom
    5. Describe Ausubel's theory and its application in the classroom
       
  • 3 - Topic 3: Information Processing and How Children Learn Overview
    This topic examines the information processing model which explains how children learn. Also discussed are general principles of learning based on different theories that may be applied to teaching.

    Topic Outcomes

    Upon completion of this topic, you will be able to do the following:

    1. Explain the information processing model
    2. Describe sensory memory
    3. Discuss the role and purpose of working memory
    4. List the features of long term memory
    5. Explain the nine (9) principles which describe how children learn

This microcourse discusses the theories explaining how children learn.  Topics in the course  focus on classical and operant conditioning, observational learning, meaningful learning, and the information processing model. This knowledge of how children will help teachers and parents to better understand the children in the classroom or at home. This microcourse consists of 3 topics.
