  • 1 - Topic 1 | Creating a Safe Environment in the Preschool
    This topic discusses how a safe environment can be created for children in the preschool (nursery and kindergarten) and at home.

    Topic Outcomes

    Upon completion of this topic, you will be able to do the following:

    1. Explain how to ensure a safe school environment for children
    2. Describe steps to be taken to ensure the playground is safe
    3. Discuss toy safety issues for children
    4. ist preschool selection criteria for children
  • 2 - Topic 2; Safety Management
    This topic examines the principles of safety management, prevention of unintentional injuries, steps in fire prevention, and teaching children about road safety.

    Topic Outcomes

    Upon completion of this topic, you will be able to do the following:

    1. Identify the common causes of unintentional injuries among children
    2. Describe the four basic principles of safety management
    3. Explain why infants and toddlers are at greatest risk for unintentional injury
    4. Discuss the role of the school in reducing unintentional injuries
    5. Determine how road safety should be taught to children
  • 3 - Topic 3; Management of Injuries
    This topic discusses the types of injuries that could happen to children such as choking, burns, eye injury, nose bleed, and fainting. It also provides steps that can be taken to avoid such situations.

    Topic Outcomes

    Upon completion of this topic, you will be able to do the following:

    1. Explain the purpose of first aid
    2. Take the necessary action when a child is choking
    3. Differentiate between the types of burns
    4. Act when a child has eye injury or a nose bleed
    5. Help a child experiencing blackouts or fainting

The microcourse examines the importance of a safe environment for children. Emphasis is on safety indoors and outdoors both in preschools and the home, steps teachers, parents and caregivers should take to ensure that children are taught about various aspects of safety. The course consists of 3 topics.

You will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement based on the

  1. Submission of TWO (2) short essays and achieved the required standard
  2.  The essays are based on the learning materials and your experience as a teacher or parent or a person interested in safety of children
1 - Discuss safety issues indoors and avoidance of injury and accidents
2 - Analyse safety issues outdoors such as in the playground and the child's surroundings
3 - Identify issues related to food safety for children
